Professional soccer’s K League 1 Incheon United striker Stefan Mugosa broke his two-month goal drought and moved closer to the top of the scoring charts.
Mugosa broke a 0-0 deadlock in the 24th minute of the first half of Incheon United’s 35th round home match against Gwangju FC on Sunday at the Incheon Football Stadium.
It was Mugosa’s 15th goal of the season, his first in six games since the 29th round against Daegu FC on Aug. 31.
After back-to-back shots from Gerso and Jung Dong-yoon were saved by Gwangju goalkeeper Kim Kyung-min, Mugosa pounced on the loose ball and finished with a sensational right-footed volley eos파워볼 to give bottom-placed Incheon a crucial three points.
After celebrating the goal with a spectacular display worthy of his nickname, Mugosa let out a roar as he sprinted down the field.
“It was an important game for the team, and I’m happy that we played well and believed in our teammates and got the three points,” said Mugosa, ”especially since I was able to contribute with a goal.
With his goal, Mugosa overtook Ilyuchenko (Seoul-14) to become the league’s top scorer and increase his chances of becoming the league’s top goal scorer.
Mugosa, who has played for Incheon since 2018 and has scored 86 goals in 173 K League 1 appearances, has yet to win the top scorer title.
“It’s true that I’m close to the top scorer title, but my priority is to stay in the first division,” Mugosa said.
“Incheon deserves to stay in the first division, so my focus is on survival,” he emphasized. ”To survive, you need to score goals, so I hope I can contribute with goals and the title will follow.”
“If you look at the struggles of Suwon Samsung, who were relegated this season, it’s hard to come back to the top division once you go down to K League 2. We have to stay in the league no matter what,” he said, adding, ”We don’t need anything else, just focus on training and work hard.”
Incheon (35 points) will face 11th-ranked Jeonbuk Hyundai (37 points) in the next round on Nov. 2 in a fateful matchup. Incheon’s win and Jeonbuk’s loss to Jeju United on the same day narrowed the gap between the two teams to two points, putting their last-ditch battle to avoid relegation in jeopardy.
“I’m grateful to the fans for their unconditional support,” said Mugosa, who added, ‘I know it’s not easy to come from such a long distance, but we need the support of the ’12th man’. I hope you will come to Jeonju for the next match.”
He continued, “Jeonbuk has a very good squad and is a difficult team to play against. It’s more difficult because it’s away from home, but if we maintain the atmosphere and performance that brought us the result today, I think we can produce a good result,” he said.
