Liverpool could be poised to complete one of Europe’s strongest midfield combinations.
“Liverpool, who are looking for a new defensive midfielder, are considering a move for Alan Varela (22, Porto),” Portuguese outlet Ozogo reported on Monday (Aug. 28).
Revamping the midfield was one of Liverpool’s top priorities last summer. With the departures of James Milner, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Jordan Henderson, and Fabinho, a massive generational shift was inevitable.
The reinforcements went according to plan. A series of top-notch signings, such as Alexis Sanchez and Dominic Soboslawski, were touted as the best midfield in Europe.
Not that it didn’t leave something to be desired. Defensive midfielders were lacking. Wataru Endo, who joined the club this summer, was widely criticized for not being enough to fill Fabinho’s void.
As a result, the Reds are ready to make a move for a new defensive midfielder this summer. According to the report, Liverpool and Manchester City are among the clubs that have been linked with a move for Varela ahead of the summer transfer window.
