Wrexham players rejoice
Wrexham, the soccer team owned by actor Ryan Reynolds, who played the main character in the movie ‘Deadpool’, even won a ticket to the third division a year after being promoted to England’s fourth division.
Wrexham confirmed promotion to Division 3 Football League 1 by defeating Forest Green 6-0 in the 2023-2024 Football League 2 Round 44 home game held at the Racecourse Ground in Wrexham, Wales on the 13th (local time).
Wrexham, who accumulated 82 points in 44 games with 24 wins, 10 draws and 10 losses, secured at least third place.
4th place Milton Kindons FC (22 wins, 8 draws, 14 losses, 74 points) lost in this round, eliminating all chances of catching up with Wrexham.
In Football League 2, 1st to 3rd place are promoted.
As a result, Wrexham achieved the National League (5th division) championship in April last year and enjoyed the joy of ‘consecutive promotions’ a year after confirming promotion to the 4th division.
It is the first time Wrexham has competed in the third division since the 2004-2005 season. Return to the 3rd division after 20 years.
Founded in 1864 and boasting a history spanning over 160 years, Wrexham is the oldest football team in Wales.
In November 2020, Reynolds received global attention when he and fellow actor Rob McElhenney acquired it for $2.5 million (approximately 3.5 billion won).
In November 2022, Wrexham players attracted the attention of domestic fans by imitating Son Heung-min’s (Tottenham) patented ‘click ceremony’ during a league game against Aldershot Town.
Wrexham, which competed in England’s third division until the mid-2000s, experienced financial difficulties and was relegated from the fourth division, Football League 2, to the fifth division in 2008, leaving professional football.
Afterwards, they sought to re-enter the 4th division, the Maginot Line of professional soccer, by advancing to the promotion playoffs (PO) three times, but were eliminated in all of them and swallowed their disappointment.
Reynolds shared the news of Wrexham’s promotion on social media, saying, “Rob McElhenney was the one who told me a few years ago that a football match in north Wales would make me cry tears of joy.”
He added, “Congratulations to Wrexham and my co-owner and my ‘accomplice’, Mackelhenney,” and added, “Wrexham is truly magical.” 고스톱
